  1. They assumed he would anticipate failure and not do it. US strategists have did too good a job, but catastrophically failed to anticipate the reaction to it. Perhaps forgetting the other guy gets a vote, and if he is desperate he may take a foredoomed option.

  7. The Nixon--Khrushchev 'debate' was actually much more of a shouting match than this one was. And they were far more experienced politicians with less personal history than Zelensky and Trump. Then came détente. What Ukraine wants and what they get are two different things. Ukraine has not even drafted its under 25 year olds (the average age of a US soldier in Vietnam was 19!).
