  1. The West was getting increasingly secure, until they announced Ukraine and Georgia would become members of NATO and Georgia was instantly invaded (Russia still occupies a fifth of Georgia). Despite what happened to Georgia, Ukraine thought they were going to deter Russia, instead they only provoked it.
