If you are not self aggrandizing in print after the fact, then it is hardly likely you ever had the strong confident personality required for having conquered in actuality (see Caesar and Napoleon's memoirs). Guderian knew Russia very well from his time in the secret military college there during the Weimar Soviet collaboration, and his assessment of Soviet forces to be faced in Barbarossa was accurate . He was in a beautiful modesty contest judged by bookish aesthetes? Nooo, he spearheaded an enterprise in which temerity and a decisive lack of self doubt were as essential as the tactics and strategy. He WAS the right man for crossing the Meuse and then the drive to the coast of France, and no one can say he wasn't the ideal general for taking Moscow. The biggest strike against Guderian (like all German generals he was getting secret payments and he asked for a huge estate in addition in latter stages of the war) is that he did not stand firm in the face of Hitler's diversion of the drive on Moscow but altered his position after an interview with the Fuhrer. Von Bock was outraged.
