  1.  @jonlittle5032  They have a hermeneutic value if nicely done.. But your is hardly apposite. How Russia sees the war is probably a mirror image of how Ukraine and the West sees things. I very much doubt that Russia is self aware enough to have the ultratoughminded realist viewpoint that Anders is attributing to it.

Anyway, the international system is not one where there is a cop to call on a sitting regieme in country such as Russia. And knowing if they lose power they are going to be hauled off to prison is the very best of incentives for Putin and company to follow through on their aggressive war to the bitter end rather than ever be convinced to relinquish power. They have nothing to gain by backing down. As Kris Kristopherson put it ''Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose'. The ICC is not achieving anything, unless their aim is to appear to be relevant.

How can we square 'great powers are not above the law' ethos' theory of the West, with the US vetoing all international institutions' legal action against Israel over their armed forces behavior in Gaza? Like Israel, Russia has gone, and likely will continue to go, further that anyone in the West expected. Clearly, Putin places a much higher value on Ukraine being kept out of the Western alliance/sphere of influence than Western analyses comprehend. The job for politicians is to steer their government's policy in their country's interests. Be they large or small, the interests of no two countries are completely Identical, and so the limitations on a country's sovereignty by a world order may be theoretically absolute, yet in practice it is is always contingent on whether it violates that particular country's interests in the leadership's view. What small countries want is defence on the cheap, paid for by American taxpayers. Until recently even the huge Germany has managed to stay on the defence freeloader bandwagon without anyone noticing. Denmark giving its entire stock of artillery shells to Ukraine shows the girly men Danes have no intention of fighting anyone,

Ukraine is very important to Russia, but notwithstanding Western rhetoric, for the rest of the globe Ukraine is not the hinge on which the world order turns. The full on war fought by Putin that is calling into question the continues existance of his regime is not fought all over the planet, it is entirely in Ukraine and really all about Ukraine having tried to move from one sphere of influence to another, under the far from sensible expectation that Russia would be deterred by Ukraine's links with the US. States are limited by their assessment of whether their interests are being well served by peace. If you want peace, then you ought to make sure you are not compromising an another country's security interests in your interests.

  14.  @Xylene.T The Special Military Operation Putin mounted in early 2022 led tp the slaughter of many of the ResFed's best units. At present Putin is in a full scale industrial war that is calling into question the existence of his regime. Its is silly to assert Putin is trying to remake the world order just because he is fighting a war against a country on his own border.
