  1. The international order consists of sovereign states and Taiwan isn't one; it' is not an independent country; does not itself claim to be such. If Taiwan were to declare independence it would be invaded by China, and we know this because China has said so. After the shock of the Korean war, the US knows that China does not bluff. China did not have nuclear weapons at the time of the Korean intervention by China. A few years ago the US made veiled threats of thermonuclear weapons use against China if it attacked Taiwan. To the apparent surprise of American diplomats, China responded by pointed that it has the capacity to hit the continental US.
