Good, but too much of a Russia versus Ukraine zero sum game analysis. Russia losing is not a win for Ukraine, it is a win for America that Ukraine is paying the price for. The Ukrainians may well be paying to much of a price for the land on the western side of the Dnieper. I suspect the Ukrainian military professionals wanted to wait until the Russians attack from that bridgehead towards Odessa, because so far Russia fights badly when mounting a swift offensive. Some people are saying the Russians deliberately give ground all the better to defend with artillery when under pressure.

@gorillaguerillaDK Moving them back simply means that the closer they get to the Russian border the more densely packed and abundantly supplied the army of Russia will be. Austen is asking in the news today for a Western effort to provide Ukraine with arms f This is all very well but there are limitations in the range and quantity (HIMARS for example) of what Ukraine is given. A final victory is unattainable with this underwhelming help, which is a recipe for a bloody stalemate; exactly what Austen has already said the US wants. I think eventually Ukraine's population will call a halt to the sacrifice when it dawns on them what any attainable 'victory' will look like. Namely, Ukraine sufferings death and life changing injuries to tens of thousands of patriots in endless combat for modest gains with a less agile but more fatalistic opponent, and being depopulated by emigration to avoid the war and endless conscription. .

@daledelatte9607 The victory for Ukraine would have been deterring the Russian invasion, which happened after Ukraine had already lost Crimea and eastern Donbass.. Ukraine already had a demographic collapse problem, a long war without any prospect of ending will lead to a loss of the best people be emigration and refugees he decline to return. There is nothing worth going on with the war for over a year. Unless you think they can just import Turks en mass to get the agricultural work done after it is all over and Ukrain had a massive shortfall in workers and taxpayers.

@gorillaguerillaDK We are back at how badly the Russians are doing. While that may well be true, the cost for Ukraine of humiliating Russia is a very high one already.

@legrandliseurtri7495 Other wars ended. Ukraine was offered a deal and in 2019 Zelensky was posed to accept it. but Poroshenko and the nationalist demos made him go back on the agreement. It is really hard to understand what was offered then as more unacceptable that the death and infrastructure devastation of the current war,. which will not be over until Russia says so and Russia can never be trusted not to restart it. A loss for Russia is already a fact but that does not mean Ukraine gets a win, especially as what was offered to them in 2019 is better than anything they will get now.
