They would become as nice as Germany did after losing WW1.

War is rolling the dice. It is the act of a country that thinks its relative power must decline, but will retain a military option for a limited time. What you suggest Putin ought to have done would entail Russians being completely unconcerned with their status in the world. Russians are weird but not that weird. Every state, every individual, is concerned with their status. It's as hardwired as the attitude to food. Sure, some people are gluttons, but the opposite of that is not normal functioning it is a mental disorder. So the idea that Russia ought to be completely unworried about its status ('greatness') in the world is quite silly.

@louisaweiler5340 Clarity in defining the situation is fine if you have the overarching authority to get your definition accepted by all sides.

@lqr824 He is too either/or. He can't see there are other priorities for Western governments than defeating Russia.

@M88881 Anders thinks Ukraine trying to join Nato had nothing to do with the invasion, despite ALL THE WARNINGS FROM RUSSIA.

@lqr824 Why hasn't the West defeated Russia in Ukraine then?; they could if they wanted to. America could have disarmed Russia and preventing it getting the Bomb for a number of years after the end of WW2, but it didn't (even though Bertrand Russel and John Von Neuman advocated doing so to remove the possibility of a civilization ending Atomic war in the future). See, there were other priorities then and there are other priorities now.

@hrabathor The context is that the West is supposed to indirectly help Ukraine so much Russia agrees to end the war. Then, Zelensky wants the West to give Ukraine security guarantees as part of the agreement. That means we in the West would have to get into a direct war with Russia if it breaks a peace settlement.

@KasumiRINA Ukraine and Russia are near neighbours. They are natural enemies.

Russia is not competitive in the modern world . For a long time now Putin has surely recognized Russia as in an irreversibly terminal geopolitical, demographic and technical decline relative to the West (and China). I think the invasion was less about greatness and more rolling the dice in an act of desperation. He and the country he leads believe they have nothing to lose, and that is why they will not stop fighting.

@charlesparr1611 Japan and Germany were conquered after WW2. Maybe the US ought to have conquered Russia in 1945 but America didn't while it had an A bomb monopoly so it's silly to talk about anything but at most an Afghanistan style loss for Russia. Anyway, back to reality, yes with an all out effort to supply Ukraine the West could make the Russian stop fighting but Zelensky will insist on full security guarantees by the Western nuclear powers as part of any agreement. With Russia being so bad they would be at it again in Ukraine and we are supposed to think that is a risk worth taking; we'd get a tripwire line of contact with Russia. And a Russia that would see the West as an enemy that had humiliated it. So Russia would be an ally of China, which will be freed to make all sorts of mischief if it only had to worry about the West.

Invading a country is influencing it though.
