  1. The Russians have a lot of artillery and military engineering resources. The Ukrainian have relatively little artillery, and are sorely lacking in both combat engineers for the infantry and heavy mine clearing equipment for the front of armored spearhead columns. After the debacle of Kharkov, Russia started creating multi layered defensive lines of fortification, and the recent Ukrainian probes as yet did not get into the first line of these defenses that Russia has been given several months to construct. Ukraine . Ukraine ignored advice to follow up the Kharkov success as soon as possible. The acted like they had all the time in the world; obviously banking on it being as effortless as Kharkov again no matter how long the Russians were given to prepare. Big mistake.

  2.  @knoll9812  I would question whether the extra vehicles amounted to a relative advantage. The iron was hot, they failed to strike as the Western advisers urged them to. The minefields and integrated artillery are far more dense now, so the delay availed them naught
