I never understand why people think Russia would quit because of Western resolve. If Russia did that they might as well disarm because no one would ever take them seriously again. Even the Russians would cease to take their country seriously if it could not sustain a war in Ukraine. At present, after two years the Russians are fighting to take a city only 20 miles from their borders, which is a truly bathetic performance. So no, it is not a matter of mere Western will, the self image and objective status of Russia in the world is a factor in how much will the Russians have to go on.

Russia is a backward country, and has been for 500 years. It's not just the army that is bad.

We are not fighting Russia. Ukraine is.

I think people tend to go to extremes and advocate giving Ukraine enough to defeat Russia, which is not risk free any more than letting Ukraine get completely conquered by Russia would be. None can say what the Kremlin's response in either case might be but one could see in both extremes a clear path to direct conflict between NATO and Russia. The current policy seems designed to make Russians including Putin and those around him think the war is unprofitable and ought to be ran down, rather than Russia is facing outright defeat in Ukraine, which would constitute a mortal threat to Russia's great power status, and so what the West is doing for Ukraine seems about right.
