The Russians have to do something or they would seem weak.

The basically inert warheads of Oreshnik as used on Ukraine are easy to mock; the Kremlin will take note that they are not being taken seriously. Nuclear use by Russia is still very unlikely but it is not so unthinkable as it used to be.

General Benjamin Hodges (Retarded) thinks he is in Game Of Thrones. 'Where are my dragons?'.

Emma Ashford gently points out that Russian collapse is has to be assumed by anyone who thinks Ukraine could win. As she says such a collapse would require Ukrainian offensives and the West is not going to do that. She further says that the effectiveness of Ukrainian defence will be the key to denying Russia total victory.

When peace comes Zelensky is no longer going to have supreme power, and he will have a lot of explaining to do. So why on earth would he want to end the war?

@garrywright6217 Hodges does have knowledge. He was very prescient about the initial Russian attack.

Ukraine has been regarded as a crucial key to world power since Halford Makinder in the nineteenth century, and Russia has such propinquity to it they cannot be made to stop fighting. If the West went all out to help Ukraine with supplies. the Russian military autocracy of Putin would get clobbered and might collapse, or might prefer to escalate to battlefield nuclear weapons use against the Ukrainian army. @swankfiber5278

@joeblack1052 Oreshink strikes are performative, and the first one had the most impact. It's not viable for use as a conventional weapon on any scale. Unlike glide bombs and drones.

It would be nice to do what he says, but in the real world it is not practicable and that is probably a good thing given that Russia's reaction might be more cobra than tortoise.

Maybe it was but once Trump (it is Trump) is finished with it the Iranians will be broken

@UncleNed1 The West wants the Russians to quit, not be defeated.

Back in the Cold War, Nato commander General Bernard Rodgers said he would ask the use of nuclear weapons within hours of a Soviet attack into West Germany. Career officers like Hodges were willing to commit an inconceivable act. He understands nothing about deterrence and international politics.

@AaronB99999 Hodges is a very good military analyst, he predicted much about this war initially. Like Anders, he ought to stay in his lane.

@Onan-u3b Okay, the Feb 2022 response from Russia. Hodges was excellent on that. He is a very good soldier and all right as long as you don't let him make political decisions. He is terrible at that.

@garrywright6217 It's called chain of command.

Phase one; You amass an advantage in fires and manpower, then attack an objective that the enemy must defend and bring the bulk of his army to battle, where under the stress of facing an unfavourable correlation of forces, its will to resist against the odds can be destroyed. Phase two: the war changes from a positional one to one of movement. (eg WW1 in 1918).
