I remember reading that after D Day half the losses in NW Europe were caused by Nebewerfers (rocket mortars).

@MilitaryHistoryNotVisualized It was in actually more that half according to an encyclopedia of artillery, it did say 'by some estimates' though. I have also read that the Allied Air Forces top brass (fighter bombers I suppose) came up with all sorts of excuses about why they could not go after the Nebelwerfers in response to army generals demands that much more be done about them. The real reason was the Nebelwerfers were cleverly sited and very well protected making it an extremely dangerous assignment for the fly boys. I have heard a British veteran of Ukraine talk about various types of bombardments and he particularly hated being under fire from the Vasilek automatic 82 mm gun-mortar.

@cmanlovespancakes Those Ukrainians trained by the British or American regular Army have complained that they had been taught small unit tactics suitable for counter insurgency rather than methods suitable for battles against a combined arms invader with an imprecise yet nonetheless overwhelming firepower advantage.

@andresmartinezramos7513 Maybe you are right.. However that the Allied armies'' commanders were extremely frustrated about the air force fobbing them off about dealing with Nebelwerfers indicates to me that it was responsible for a lot more casualties than is often discussed.

@SuperMadman41 That was a long, long time ago. It would have been published in the late 80s.

@willd7596 Not aware the Germans had so much heavy artillery in NW Europe that losses to German artillery could not have been--in a great many cases---actually to Neberwerfers.

Seagal was notorious for injuring stuntmen's family jewels to extent they had to go to hospital. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Frt0X2ojDQ Ego, and they could not hit him back. I think Vad is actually saying in his latest article what many Western strategist are thinking: that Russia is unlikely to be a good sport about becoming a global joke though being beaten in conventional war by a medium sized power like Ukraine. Can't have it both ways, if and when Russia is trounced and forced to retreat from all Ukraine (as Vad is now predicting), Putin will have a range of thermonuclear options against Ukraine. By that time the totally humiliated Russian generals will be ready to obey such an order. I'd love someone to explain why the endgame whereby Russia just swallows it is so obvious.

You cannot train to do one thing, then effectively do another.

The US is Godzilla, but has no experience of fighting anyone but Bambi. The Russians are all about mass effect, but have used one fifth of their army in Ukraine.Ukrainians trained by British or Americans have complained that they have been taught small unit tactics suitable for counter insurgency rather than full on battles against a regular army with a imprecise yet nonetheless overwhelming firepower advantage.
