I've stayed in worse in London. However my very worst were not in the UK. I'm thinking of a shack I stayed in Nepal, and a place in Safed in Israel, where it turned out I had a lot of company at night when the lights went off.

@A3ATOT Cheaper to manufacture. To be fair they copied the west - Holiday Inn once did the same.

@A3ATOT Oh, I've seen that to some extent in the west - Ikea is popular. When I was growing up a lot of people had similar furniture.

@arlaabrell8658 Too small to see, but eager to crawl all over me and bite me. Even worse I ended up bringing them into another place with me.

@arlaabrell8658 I reckon they were either mites or fleas (not bed bugs or lice). Def not scabies as they tend to give you bad skin irritation.

@hellopolly2691 Cheapest, rather than cheap. I can vouch that some of those under £50 are horrific.

Agreed I've stayed in worse in London. London tap water is undrinkable too.

@daniels1263 Yeah, if you wanted to be indoctrinated into Marxism-Leninism, taught biased history or to spy on your parents etc. They were good at teaching sciences, languages and physical education I suppose.

@cornishhh I stayed in a top hotel in Edinburgh some years ago, a famous one and parts of the walls were bashed through. The room was en suite but there was nothing to distinguish the room from an ordinary B&B except the price and a fancy restaurant downstairs.
