@matthewhuszarik4173 "At least science and political parties actually exist" — Science is an abstract concept, it is not a physical object. It is often talked about as some ideal which does not reflect the reality of scientific practice (the peer review system is inadequate in many areas for example. As for political parties, again you can debate whether they exist outside an abstract sense. Parties exist in the same sense organised religions do as a mass of individuals co-operating to a common goal (or not co-operating as is often the case.)

Science does not exist in the same way a quasar or a fossil does, it is an idea and a practice, not an object. Science exists either in the way sport does (as a temporary proces/system with rules/methods, not an object), or a school of philosophy. When many people talk about "science", they are not talking about a thing, they are talking about a system or an ideal . In many cases, that ideal is not fulfilled at all e.g. peer review is an ideal, and yet there is a dearth of proper peer reviewing going on, due to a lack of peer reviewers and/or time to do so. A significant proportion of claims made in academic papers are never properly verified around the time. p.s. Zen Buddhism does contain observation through meditation, as do some other religions. Zen attempts to analyse the mind and the processes within it, alongside the perception of reality. It is enmeshed with other stuff, but there is observation in it.

@arandomlilin4605 Curious you should say that. I used to attend Skeptics in the Pub* near the local university and I was surprised to learn almost none of the students there were in STEM. They were in the humanities, which was unexpected. * Always with a K for some reason. Not sceptic.

@Jeremy9697 Thing is, I'm not scared of dying anymore. Unlike a lot of people during 2020 and 2021. That much was obvious. They were terrified, because they think they have wasted their lives and that's the end of it if they go. Of course, if you aren't living, you are already dead. I have no such fear.

@matthewmetz3655 My usual replies are things like, "What are we going back to?" and "what will we have left?" I also remind them of the economic and psychological devastation that's already been caused and whether it's worth it for the hoi polloi.

@apuertorican1773 The USA has many admirable things such as its Bill of Rights, and a past of fighting Communism & the Axis, but also a lot of dirt in its past and present. They have been frontrunners in the Swiss Project, especially "Mr. Bates".

Us peasants aren't supposed to have meaning in their lives, they're supposed to do what they're told, but what we're told, make money, pay money and obey. What little licence we had is now being taken away from us under the guise of "safety".
