Minor point, if they are entering illegally, they are NOT trying to petition for entry into the United States.

@Knight-Bishop — Entering the USA illegally is not a misdemeanor, LOL! But your point is valid, it shouldn’t be a death sentence either. Most are just seeking a better life.

@jean-luceyesofyoureyes5502 — Only if we can agree that NONE of us belong here as we are all immigrants down to the last man, woman and child. Our ancestors came here for a better life and opportunity. I get the nation has changed, and for security we need to know who enters the USA and why. But that need doesn’t make an immigrant bad by default. We WANT them to enter legally, but most are desperate looking for a way to survive.
