  147. I’ve had several golden retrievers, my last Paco, she passed a couple of years ago in her sleep at the age of 20 human years. I’ve never known smarter, more obedient, more compassionate dogs. 🐶 Paco rudely woke me up barking at 5 am needing to go out and I felt bad for yelling "DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS GIRL?" I felt horrible when from that point forward when every morning I awoke to a soft, Oh so polite whimper, a soft barely there bark, and if she was desperate a cold wet nose on my arm or face. She could be walked anywhere without a leash, she loved people and they loved her, but not me for I had named a female dog Paco and not Paca as I should have. Once a park ranger yelled at me for not having her on a leash, I called her taking her leash out of my back pocket, she ran up to me, saw the leash and sat and waited. As I was bending down the ranger stayed my hand saying it wouldn’t be necessary with a smile. In her final years her hips were bothering her, I couldn’t afford the nearly 20k hip replacement and the vet said she needed to be put down, I agreed, said my goodbyes and was planning comforting her as she passed. Then something weird happened, when the vet she had just let handle her without concern approached, she growled so fiercely I was even scared, I consoled her, but damn if she would let that vet near her... she KNEW. Not today I informed the vet. I took her home, got used to lifting her gently into the car, and on some days she walked less, but she was so happy, so full of joy and while she knew she could never catch a squirt again, she tried. When she passed in her sleep by my bedside, it was a sweet sorrow. If dogs go to heaven, she will be there. Me... maybe... maybe not. Paco most definitely.
