I can remember my Irish mother referring to her Ireland based family as “Milk-toast,” saying with disdain things like “standing for nothing makes you nothing,” and quoting “All it takes for evil to exist, is for good men to do nothing.” And I can remember my Grandmother on our fathers side showing fiery anger, getting spitting mad at a neighbor buying a VW car. Almost 30 years after Germany occupied Norway she would occasionally launch into angry references about Germans. Once she shared a few stories that I remember as a young kid scaring the crap out of me. Her brief simple plain description of relatives actions and other events in Norway were horrific. To her, Germany, Germans, anything German was hated with a loathing like I have never seen since. As a kid these snippets of WW2 stories were chilling, seeing grandparents go from sweet and wonderful to livid and spitting mad at the mere mention of German anything made me realize that it must have been worse than anything I could imagine.

S K — We, those who have never experienced war on the ground... have no clue the actual horrors and memories that remain afterwards. It’s seriously scary.

@briangarrow448 — I heard stories of women being lined up to cook and clean for them, their children too, they stood in family groups. They explained their duties, and failure would have severe consequences. The children were being taken away and a woman objected, her child was shot, then her as an example to all. And that was just the beginning. You don’t want to know how they fought back.

Guy Incognito -- I know. My relatives whom I love have been forever changed. I have realized that they will lie, cheat, steal, do ANYTHING in the name of faith and their Republican Parties success. My view of them has been forever changed thanks to Trump. Still love them, but holy hell, I will never trust what they say ever again.

@darrellsmith4204 -- Absolutely, but to say that level of anger, of hatred, after a war can be just reasoned away -- That shows a complete lack of understanding of the events they endured. We are all products of our environments, we learn by what happens in our lives. And frankly, what my grandparents described was inexcusable. I do not blame them at all for feeling that way. I get what you mean, I see the danger, but I have to give that generation a pass for what they lived through.

Jay Bee -- Your comment is offensive. My grandparents were not prone to making snap decisions, were painfully direct and honest. And their opinions were based on their and their relatives stories who lived through those times. This was not anti-German propaganda, this was their first and second hand experiences. My mother's opinions were related to Ireland's trying to remain neutral in a situation that she felt demanded a position. For my quiet, well spoken and reserved mother to call Ireland's position, and their people, her family, Milquetoast... that was the equivalent for her of screaming at the top your lungs at someone inches from their faces. And seriously Jay, you need to research more and speak less. WW2 has some horrific acts on all sides, to dismiss what happened as propaganda is a disservice to everyone who lived through those times.

Guy Incognito -- "My hatred?" I have no hatred towards Germany, Russia or Japan, or its descendants. My late wife was Japanese, her maiden name was Ishimara. I drive a Japanese vehicle, and yes, have laughed off some cold comments from my elderly relatives from that era. Remembering our history is critical to not repeating it. Understanding it, hence this channel, is part of that and it is important. Where do you get that I harbor hatred, when I was speaking of what I learned from my relatives first and second had accounts?

@briangarrow448 -- Agree completely. The hatred left over from WW2 was palpable 30-40 years later in the people who either lived through it, or knew people who had. Chilling stories that IMHO would make excellent movie material. The occupations of Norway and Finland by Germany and Russia were horrific, and I got the feeling when other relatives hushed them, shaking their heads and hands to discourage them from telling stories that were too much for us kids to hear... that there were horrors they had experienced or knew of that will never ever be known. Glad your family was lucky, and 6 boys survived.

Guy Incognito — You are seriously clueless. I was not inspired by hate by Trump. Your generalization that all WW2 people, the entire generation were inspired to hate by the Germans is insanity. They experienced things first hand that we can only imagine. Neither my parents or I hate Germans or any nationality. My grandparents who lived through it, who kept I touch with family in Ireland, Germany and Finland, they had a hatred that ran so intensely it was scary as hell sometimes, but I assure you, it was for cause. That you would dismiss it as a response to or because of propaganda is sad, rude even. And seriously, I don’t hate Trump, I voted for him in 2016, but didn’t this year. Not because I hate him, because I see him as a salesman, a spin master, a slick smart salesman who lies and manipulates everyone his entire life, it’s how he became successful, and even his success I believe is self hype. I don’t hate him, I see him for what he is, a liar, a master manipulator, and believe his followers, like you, whom I call Trumpets, are as close to a cult as it can be without actually being one. And I believe him to be dangerous, just because he and his followers are attempting to destroy democracy in our nation, and justify it behind nationalistic ideals. But I don’t hate his followers either, I just think them misled. Please stop trolling, it’s not a good look, and it belittles you unnecessarily.

@fitchmichael3975 — Trump is a symptom of nationalism, and the tactics he used to get elected should remind everyone of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany... but most don’t see it because we have forgotten our history. And your tying nationalism to racism is frankly disturbing, they aren’t necessarily related.
