three six and nine — Please think about what you wrote. The nation was starving, taxes were raised to support the Kings building folly. Yes, farmers were conscripted as in forced to work. When? Summers because winter work was impossible due to snow and frozen ground. When are crops grown? Spring and Summertime. Where were the farmers forced to go? To build castles while their crops failed causing even MORE food shortages and starvation. Let’s be clear, I LOVE Belgium because of these fabulously beautiful castles. But the people killed King Ludwig because he was about as bad a ruler as there has ever been. The castles are beautiful but cost so many lives to build it’s not something to be celebrated. You are literally like the people in Germany who praise Hitler for his wonderful gardens, his raising up the German people, his humanitarian efforts for common German people.

He wasn’t killed for creating jobs, he was killed for bankrupting the country building castles while the people were starving. Had he cared a bit more... who knows he might be remembered differently.

@Siha and you do? Ludwig starved his people, used the funds from the treasury to build fantiviful castles while the nation starved and his people killed them for it. What the hell did I get wrong?

@duesen00 — 😳 That’s way different than I learned in school. I am far from expert, but from what I remember he spent heavily, dipped into the country’s coffers to finance his castle building. Not all of the laborers were volunteers, some were craftsman pulled from their homes and families and essentially forced to work, perhaps not on the castles, but on the supporting logistics. Their rulers attention on the castles caused problems, food shortages, etc., in his country. The people were not happy, and much of the government was left wondering if their king was sane. Lacking the means to remove what was essentially a king, they improvised. That’s what I remember, but I’m in the USA and those classes were 40 years ago, LOL! I’m not arguing who’s right or wrong, just saying that’s what I remember. Clearly I need to do some homework.

Christoph Sencar — If Ludwig funded schools, that was missing from my studies. “My” association to Hitler is mine alone as both bled their country dry, the people suffered, all in pursuit of their goals, be it world domination or building fanciful castles using forced labor during a recession and famine. I’m curious why you think the people rose up and killed Ludwig? He built those castles using forced labor, they were paid, but not enough to feed their families. They were required to work instead of farm, exacerbating the food shortages. Ludwig spent everything in the vaults and raised taxes to fund his building folly. I get you like them, as do I. But whitewashing over the history of how they were built is wrong.

The first building with the heliostats moving mirrors... motors and gears fail... when they do, that’s going to be a maintenance nightmare! Not to mention that the occupants will have to endure misaligned mirrors reflecting into their homes. Yikes!

@duesen00 — Hmmmm… thought he was crazy, wild spending on building castles while his people starved. He was ‘taken’ to a Dr. And found dead in the morning. I’m thinking his people had enough, and killed him. “Found dead in the morning,” doesn’t mean without his throat being cut.
