People think of cows as dumb animals, when in fact they are not. Cows have feelings, good and bad days, and can be friendly, loving attention and playful. As a kid I remember taking the brush part of an old broken push broom to them and I started to brush them, and they LOVED it! And it warms my heart to hear of an occasional āsavedā cow, because I can certainly tell you that some animals become pets. I can remember my favorite chicken, who was oddly affectionate, and then later my favorite little cow who was also a sweetheart, when they ended up on the dinner table. I get that dad was trying to enforce the point of food animals on me, to get me to understand, but I couldnāt eat. That was the worst times ever in a childās life.

Ā TracchofyreĀ ā Maybe... But the experience made me realize Iād never do that to my kids, LOL! And my dad was kinda right, we raised animals for food, not pets. I think my bigger point in sharing that was that some animals become so much more. Weād have these fireside dinners outside every so often, and that chicken would just hop up in my lap and fall asleep. It was kinda cool. And raising that cow, from the day it was born I knew it was different. It just seemed so much smarter and friendlier than any of the others. Weād leave for school, and it would come over to watch me leave, Iād stop, scratch her head and everything just seemed better. We had a bull that became a little hostile at times, and I remember being in the field, I walked in to say hello to her, and up comes this angry bull. She never let that bull get close to me, wherever side he went to she was between us. She stayed with me all the way to the fence line. People say cows are dumb, and that may be true, but that one, she was a sweetheart. So gentle, so friendly, and like that day in the field, protective even. IMHO she deserved to live a long and happy life.

Ā @spark_6710Ā ā It was a small farm, the animals, the gardens, the fields, all worked to support our family. I was saddened for a few months, especially at dinner time, so much that I couldnāt eat, but it wasnāt a lifelong trauma. I get that you are vegetarian, thatās wonderful. But... not everyone is. Cows were a source of income and food, I do NOT blame my dad for what happened. My point was simple, cows are not dumb, they have a mind of their own and are a lot more intelligent than we think. And just like people, they have personalities. We used a butcher service, it, a guy in a small truck with a refrigerated box, would come by for an appointment every few months. We would get a small portion of the cow, and he would pay my dad for the rest. Cows would queue up for the barn in a storm, to be milked, and they lived happy lives with us. Most were friendly, and some craved attention like my cow. Iām fine many years after experience, and I am sorry that you were so Seriously affected by it. I will always remember her, she really was unique. And for the record I get your position, it would be great if everyone were vegetarian, but we are a diverse people, and we are not all the same. Iām sure you realize that nature works on a predator/prey system, thatās the circle of life. Even deer will kill and eat squirrels, and as they have few predators now, there is a reason for hunting them. My point is itās all good. ššš¼
