Dogbite007 — I’ve known a few people convicted of sexual offense and are now sex offenders. One was convicted of a crime when he was thirteen and was tried as an adult. 13! One man was convicted of rape for having sex, for the first time, with his soon to be wife. The wife admitted it was consensual, but was against her previously stated religious beliefs, and so she called the police three days after the event. He is now a sex offender, and they are now married.
Here’s the thing, every situation is different, every case, every individual, different. Some are bad, and repeat offenders who deserve the restrictions. But there are others who are not a risk to society, who suffer the same lifetime, yes LIFETIME classification, which inhibits their ability to survive even after their sentences have been served.
I was once like you. OMG! A sex offender! I don’t want them in my neighborhood, near my kids schools, near me! But as I’ve learned more about the PEOPLE, I realize the system is flawed, seriously flawed. There are entire industries built and sustained around either keeping sex offenders in check, or being paid to council, rehabilitate them, with a direct need to keep them in the program to perpetuate their income. An example of this was my 90 year old neighbor who was being assisted in his home getting a shower and made a pass at the home health care aide. She reported it, her company called the police, who investigated, and he admitted it thinking he had done nothing wrong. Because it was an unwanted advance he was ordered to undergo counseling. The phycologist there gave him a visual test, and told the 90 year old guy to click on the screen here, or there if he was attracted to them, and here to move forward to the next picture in the series. He was told point blank that if he wasn’t attracted to any of them he would have to retake the test, and it wasn’t cheap. The result? My 90 year old neighbor who knows NOTHING about computers, ever, never even had a cell phone, was branded a pedophile, and is now a sex offender for life. He didn’t want to 'fail' the test so he said to me in the car on the way home that he had selected a few, he thinks. The kicker? HE IS LEGALLY BLIND! Has been for 20 years since he had a stroke. They gave a blind man, who can barely make out light and dark shapes in front of him a VISUAL test and branded him a sex offender. No debate, as he had already pleaded guilty to the "offense" of making a pass at his home health care aide, and now he is a PEDOPHILE. A registered sex offender.
So your comments that they deserve to be jobless and sleeping as indigents in parks under highway underpasses kind of bothers me. I agree, SOME are dangerous, and NEED to be monitored. But the efforts to keep the public safe, the system, is seriously hosed. To label all sex offenders criminals is just as wrong as labeling all oriental people smart, blacks dumb or criminals, etc., I’ve seen the system, and met a few of them, and they are just people sometimes, as imperfect as you and I. And no one, no one ever should be forced to live under an overpass in tents without running water and without sewage, with no means to support themselves.
