I know as a kid we had a neighbor whose land was blocked by other neighbors who put up gates. He was arrested for damaging their property after they locked it. He was surprised to learn that he had no rights to access his property up there. It was a big mess.

@common_c3nts — When they bought the land, they met the realtor, visited the property the first year with no issues. Then the neighbor put up the gate, and wouldn’t budge.

@solandri69 — YES! Caution, caveat emptor, do your own due diligence, etc. ❤️👍🏽

@imjashingyou3461 — Are in California? LOL! Depends on the state, land laws and how long the road has been in use. Most states say two years for eminent domain laws, meaning that if you use their land for over two years, then that strip of land becomes either jointly owned, or a type of semi private road. Less than two years in most states, the owner that owns the land can fence gated do whatever he wants to with it, and it is perfectly legal.

@JohnRunyon — Maybe I used the wrong term. What I was referring to was say when a neighbor puts up a fence that is 20’ over onto your property line, like say a road. After a given time, usually 2 years, then they have a right to the land and can have the property line redrawn.

@coop5329 — All true. But my neighbor had owned the property and had access when he bought it. The other neighbor decided to block him for unknown reasons. He goofed, he assumed that because he looked at the property with the realtor, had visited it and it had access.

That is a weird fetish. 😂 On a serious note, eminent domain takes a precedent of say two years. That’s one of the reasons property disputes are such a hot issue. Say a neighbor puts in a road while your out of town on your land. If you take no action, that neighbor just stole your land for free after two years. (Time varies by state) A long road could add up to acres of your land seized by a neighbor. It’s a messy world sometimes.

Sounds great if you’re one of the landowners! 😂
