The main drawback is you have to build a large system to handle large loads. Also modern lithium cells are rated for around 6000-7000 cycles which is closer to 20 years and its not like they just quit working at that point they are just degraded.

@MayaPosch Depends on the type of machine... common ford tractors, definitely have people making new parts, a neighbor of mine makes ford 8N and similar parts.

To clean those magnets really fix a neodymium magnet on the end of a rod for safety and use it to draw the filings off... the stronger magnet wins. doesn't need to be a real big magnet just stronger field.

Always better to have a single cylinder on the bed... if it fails it just comes down rathr than one side trying to stay up and it maybe falling over or twisting the bed. Also half the failure points... gear whine in reverse is probably just straight cut gears and no syncros.
