Current battery tech at that for the forseen 10-20 years means that there isn't enough lithium supply to even convert all vechicles to electric power.... maybe a quarter at best.

"Hybrids require less maintenance " more maintenance due to more components, and many more points of failure... the Achates OP2S engine should require less maintenance as it is a simpler design overall.... no valve train is a huge reduction in complexity.

No larger engines have economies of scale that small engines generally cannot achive. All civilian vehicle engines are "small" engines.... when they say large engines they mean infrastructure scale engines like hospital generators, ship engines etc (which are dirty because they run dirty fuel)...

Well due to it being an opposed piston it should be probably half that of a detroit diesel from the start due to lower exhaust pressure... similar sound though and the turbo willl quiet it down a bit further as well.

Till you find out that about equally as easy to make "oil burners" carbon neutral as it is to make electric cars carbon neutral. for the "oil burner" you grow soybeans or similar oiliy plant... for the electric car you have to turn to more difficult means such as solar and window power to eliminate fossil dependence. difficult because it requires infrastructure to be built that doesn't' exist yet.

Nope, some cars will become electric but it won't be possible to convert all cars to electric doing so would require more lithium than can be mined.

Not really a problem for a prototype... they said they were using off the shelf parts for the prototype and would move to bespoke parts for production volume engines.

problems solved 50 years ago....

it's a two stroke... so has 2x the torque of a 3 piston 4 stroke... so it balances out.
