The PS5 can use external drives but only for PS4 games, and maybe offline storage of PS5 games, you can also expand the internal storage of the PS5 down the road with a regular SSD off the approved list.

@Notfallkaramell What is expensive today is peanuts tomorrow... 2TB = $190 or so right now, give it year or two and that will be $125-150 as well as perform well enough.

@mav3ric100 The PS5 NVMe drive support is not proprietary... you will however need to get a PCIe 4.0 drive what meets Sony's specs... otherwise it probably won't work well. That probably means drives that can do 6000MBps+. Like the Sabrent rocket 4 or the Samsung 980 Pro.... etc... give it a year and there will be more drives available that can do these speeds.
