@nuarius They would have been more successful integrating a total roofing package that looks nice but also produces... what they have done instead is make an expensive virtue signalling roof (I have a lot of money and am very green) that under performs both as a roof and as solar panels. They could have acchieved those goals with something like a high quality standing seam metal roof + inset panels of any type designed to fit between seams.

@BenjaminCronce What good is a 25% tax cut if they go up by the same amount on your taxes once you factor in the taxes up and down the scale from business to workers and sales taxes... instead of giving us tax cuts for doing stuff like this... we should have taxes cut across the board so we can choose to do this freely. Also solar isn't the only or even best answer in many situations.

@billhanna2148 I would be against any product that raises the cost of the total solution with no benefits other than atheistic... with a small sacrifice in athstetics you can isntall standing seam roofs + solar between the seams at much higher output and lower costs. And... have a much longer lasting roof.

@brucemcardle Just install a new roof + conventional solar already... your house will have fallen in before they are ready to service you, and they don't want to do old houses anyway, only new.

@esecallum CIGS cells have been around a long time.... they are just expensive, CIGS + Perovskite = much much higher efficiency than CIGS (which has bad efficiency but is cheap-ish to make although doesn't beat current Si sells once it reaches market, probably because the cells have numerous other advantages like being the most durable flexible panels made).

That's nonsense.... a Telsa roof is 4x the price per square foot compared to a top quality standing seam roof. With the money left over you could buy mount an equivalent solar system and batteries. And all you got was a roof with solar and no batteries. Basically a 40k Tesla roof with a regular metal roof would only cost about $10k, and a conventional solar system would only cost about 10-15k + another 10k for batteries.

@letsnotmakethispersonal6021 It's because regular solar panels are specced for high efficiency, and these solar panels are worse than flex solar panels efficiency wise. Literally the only thing these panels have going for them is their looks.
2
@jestempies You are insane, the Tesla panels are probably the highest cost solution on the market... you can get panels for under $0.60 a watt these days while telsa is pushing 40k worth of solar tiles required to roof a basic 2000sqft roof.

@buildmotosykletist1987 about the size of a house. The most power desne ultra cap skelcap makes even today is 28x less dense than lithium.

epiccollision You are the dumb and ignorant one, I am a computer engineer that comes from a family that has been in the construction business for 4 generations. And I have been watching Tesla solar roofs since they were announced, and until they can ramp up production ( which they haven't in half a decade) its a scam.
1
Skelcap's most dense graphene ultracap is still 28x less dense than lithium. There are other high farad ultra caps out there but they are much much closer to just being batteries... even an LTO cell is practically equivalent to these.

Hydrogen, EVs etc etc.. are all tech that require long development, which is profitable for companies that want to milk investors, we could have already solved the "fossil fuel problem" at least a decade ago with the land we already have allocated to corn ethanol (roughly 38million acres) enough land, and high quality land I might add that you could grow around 10-15million gallons of carbon neutral biodiesel per year. Much of that land is even alrady paid for by goverment incentives that are doing literally nothing but taking tax dollars to pay farmers to grow crops that don't actually put any extra energy on the market. Corn's Fossil Efficiency ratio is about 1.... fossil diesel is about 0.8 and Soy is about 5... there is literally no reason to be pit mining lithium when you can already solve the fuel problem and the carbon problem with technology that has been around for 20 years.

@dalesplitstone6276 Not comparable my arse... the above nonsense leaves a big enough hole in your pocket you buy several of the mideas. They are absolutely comparable on cost / benefit... if some stupid regulation means you can't use the midea ... its a stupid regulation.
