My grandpaw was quite ill and needed top keep some sodas cold in his room which was not really setup to have a mini fridge... so I snuck in a portable fridge. They can run on 12V from your car or from a wall adapter... and its a real refrigerator with a tiny little compressor in it, its been running for nearly a year now (my grandpa passed but at least he had a cold coke when he wanted it). And it could really get them quite cold and is more than capable of hitting freezing. It was $130 for the 10QT model... its small and portable and you pay a slight premium for that but it does really work and is fairly quiet.

The worst plugs I have ever ran across are the ones on Brazil... they have two round sometimes half plastic prongs and are use the plastic plug body for polarization. The are also prone to the plug self destructing since the round prongs can easily get pulled out of the cord, I have never seen this occur with flat plugs unless someone took pliers to them. I actually think our simple plugs are one of the best designs just because of that THEY ARE SIMPLE. The Brazilian plugs are horrible mangled by bureaucracy and politics (and due to lots of imports in the past many older Brazilian plugs also accept US plugs though politics reared its face again and banned these recently... going so far as for poliece to inspect electrical stores and confiscate illegal plugs and insane waste of resources). I would argue that for a 2 prong plug anything more than what we use is overengineered, and for 3 prong plugs we've pretty much reached the ideal point of simplicity and safety. All of the safety measures on modern sockets have made them harder to use... and more prone to wear.

Good grief just use an inverter generator... a $150 sportsman generator is all most people need for electronics, and they can use their big generator for heat if in a winter outage.
