As a German having both toilet styles in my home, I like the "poop shelves" more, as I really don't like getting splashed on me, even more in a public toilet, imagining that dozens did their job there before me. Yes, the other toilet styles have many advantages, but the splashing is just more important to me.

  2. I really don't understand why people have curtains at all? Plastic sliding doors don't have all those disadvantages of the curtains :)

I think (and I may be wrong) the light switch outside the bathroom stems from the past when they wired the light and the ventilation to the same switch, so people are supposed to leave the light/vent on for a few minutes after they'r done to get the smell out. Then they switch it off and so don't need to enter the bathroom just to do so. This is also why there is in most cases a little control light on the switch. Maybe time delayed vents weren't cheap or available back then. By the way I as a German encounter outside bathroom switches very rarely, about one out of 20 bathrooms.

  4.  @karlybyrd1551  I don't noticed much difference between poop shelves and other toilets, after both it smells.
