It was oddly touching that the site remains a 'pocket park'.

Not being a US American I had no idea Hawaii became part of the US via military action, and that late in history.

Rose Terrace Two. So grand, and beautiful.
11
Love the perfect symmetry of the power house.
11
Love this one, I think my favourite NYC house on this channel. So far. Thanks for showing the floor plan. So grand, only one room wide. Beautiful symmetrical facade. What a shame such a place is gone.
10
3 minutes ish, love that shot of the staircase. The life of royalty, walking up and down grand staircases.

Perhaps Samuel was just an uncomplicated individual. Uncomplicated is a nice way to say not bright. Connections trump everything else in this world, same as it ever was. The house is very pretty and well proportioned.

"skirmishes with cannonballs.". What a life. Perfect house. Wish people building new old house would copy this.
8
Now I understand why most plantation houses that are open to the public don't mention slavery. Thinking about the reality is very sad.
8
That "prefabricated" staircase is magnificent. Todays prefab building materials don't quite measure up. 😅
7
Bedfords Westport YMCA still standing as part of the Westport shopping centre. I think I prefer the style and scale of this building to either of his mansions.
7
The video image alone was enough to send me go ogling. Wow, so many beautiful houses built by one family. The 'Fabulous Fahnestocks' could have been a film by Orson Wells. My favourite was one not shown in the video, 'Ker Arvor' built for Snowden Fahnestock in Newport in 1932, so they still had money in the depression. It's a mansion yes, but not a marble palace, and still a private home.
7
Check out the Henry Poor house in Tuxedo Park New York. Still a private home. It sits oddly in the landscape but it is, I think, quite beautiful. Described as Jacobean in style, which I don't usually like.
6
The butler was the patsy/fall guy I suspect.
6
Can't say I love the house, but I do love the name, 'Idle Hour'.
6
Well, being a child riding your tricycle up and down the 112 ft hall would have been fun.
6
Beautiful, and built on a human scale.
6
Agree, love to see the floor plans of these houses. Often can't find them on line
6
Stone Manor, 7 luxury condominiums, 6 of them owned by the same person. The interiors are intact! Huge rooms, enjoyably OTT ornamentation.
6
Lottery headquarters? Seems apt somehow.
5
Delightfully OTT. Would love to spend a dark and stormy night there.
5
Really interesting topic. Thanks Ken.

Wow, those interiors were...busy, but I did like the dining room. It's unfortunate that so many of these buildings are demolished, but what could they realistically be used for? Even people who can afford to live like that don't wish to. A line from the film Gosford Park "does one really want the bother?"
4
Vid title made me chuckle. Maybe I'm not clueless, I'm a spy?
4
I can't imagine how optimistic they must have been to build such huge buildings just to live in.
4
Goodness me, the staircase! Magnificent. I want one just like it.
4
Grandeur without beauty. The cost of upkeep of such a building means its use for any purpose is unlikely. I admire the optimism of those who built such edifices, but its time is past.
4
Favourites from this video were the master bedroom/ballroom, and Ken's suit.
3
All magnificent but my favourite Duke mansion is one that wasn't built. Horace Trumbauer designed an enormous French chateau style mansion for Duke Farms. The floor plan and an image of what it would have looked like can be found on-line.
3
I love a limestone vestibule.
3
More like a hotel in scale, than a house. Oh, I see it became a hotel. Apt.
3
Beautiful staircases.
3
Cost of demolition high. Cost of arson, a box of matches, plus insurance payout. Not suspicious at all, these many mansion fires.
3
Or an art gallery.
3
I like that I was surprised by the ending. Still standing.
3
Only 9 seconds in, the staircase! My favourite. No need to watch any further. Magnificent woodwork.

59 Post Road East, Westport, CT

Beautiful. Love the interiors. Grand, but also well proportioned. Also like the comparatively austere exterior. The symmety. Love a faux chataeux. This one might be my new favourite on this channel. Thanks Ken.

It is a bit much but I like it. Facades are grand and quite beautiful. Interiors are almost vulgar, but the past is another country. There's a house with a similar facade, inspired by Marble House, where I live, in Melbourne Australia, built several years ago. I assume the interiors aren't anything like this. It only cost 70 million AUD, or about 50 mill USD, so it's probably rather basic by comparison.
3
Wow. Favourite houses were the first two and the last two. The second one was extraordinary. The interior detail and the facade. The second last one, by Julia Morgan, I'd love a smaller version of that house. Number one pick for me though is the guest house of the last house shown. That's the ideal for me. I've seen it online before. It's beautifully detailed, and perfectly proportioned. I'd love to see a video of Julia Morgans work. Thanks Ken

2 minutes ish the dining room is a bright yellow. I have a picture of it I cut out a magazine decades ago. The hanging panels on the walls have a rich deep red background. It's a beautiful room. My favourite though is the library which I hadn't seen before. Thanks Ken.
3
163 Marlborough Street. Looking at past listings online, the interiors seem to be intact, mantelpieces, plaster work, et cetera. Eye watering price estimates on the larger units.
3
I've read that it has it's own hydro electric power production, using water from the river, to heat the boilers in the house.
3
The staircase looks like a stage setting for an opera. What a place to live.
3
@omgsockss yes. This Airken house would make a good museum to highlight the reality. From an on line search, it now appears to be a wedding venue.
3
Demolished paradise and put up a parking lot.
3
Don't usually like this style, but I love this house. Favourite - the stairs. This house is one of the few featured on this channel that I would live in, if I had the choice. Wouldn't wear a tuxedo though. 😊
3
Love the house shown at 35 seconds ish.
2
'Florida Water' seems like an odd name for a perfume. Makes me think of swamps and 'gators.
2
Wow, imagine the stock market falling by 50% now. It's all funny money and make believe.
