  5. Hi Vannie! I believe that I mentioned that our dog Henry enjoys watching watching your vlogs. He barks with excitement at every sighting of sweet Zephyr. So today, at the conclusion of vlog 150, Henry was watching as you drew Zeph and he recognized her at the 16:20 mark "...I work with her laid on my feet". That was the progression of the drawing where he saw a dog. It's validation that your artistic viewpoint transforms into reality for our dog Henry. Good show, well done. Each week you give us a breath of splendor. Thank you.

  6. Vann, My favorite part of this vlog is when you speak to Zephyr. You say her name and her eyes are wide, then you say another word that she seems to recognize-"vet" followed by a noticeable reaction in her eyes. It's like she was suddenly saddened. This is quickly followed by "go for a walk" where she cocks her head and her eyes open wide again. It's priceless! Such a good dog!

My wife usually guesses your featured subject for each vlog's poem but this week had us befuddled due to so very many likely subjects. We both recognize and appreciate your great talent.   12. Vann, That was a very very scary tunnel. I've watched many canal vlogs and I don't think that I've ever seen that one. It had that ominous look with that tiny dark opening with that large flat wall to the starboard side. I've seen less scary sewer pipes. After all of your vlogs, you absolutely continue to amaze me. Although you have a mighty 10K sub base, I believe that you are still an under-discovered worldly treasure.

I don't tweet because until just recently Dirty Donald Trump dirtied the twittsphere with rudeness, so in protest I chose not to participate.   31. Vanessa, My wife and I marvel at your poetry. It's the highlight of our week! I read a book in the mid 1990's titled Deadline Poet by Calvin Trillin. He was an American political humorist that wrote a weekly satirical piece for The Nation. It was very funny. In a large way, it reminds me of you. Here you live your life as a continuous cruiser, you teach, and yet you find the time to assemble and film and edit to create this wonderful vlog each week. All of that plus you write this marvelously appropriate poem. And Mr. Trillin only had to write a political satire poem, and he likely had a staff. I'd say that it is you, Vanessa, who are the true Deadline Poet.

  40. Dear Vanessa, I CONFESS, I’ve cheated. Allow me to explain. I thoroughly enjoyed your vlog this afternoon and was inspired to compose a haiku about the mallard. First, I jotted down several key words and phrases. I got stuck on just how many syllables were in the word dabbling. Was it two or three I wondered? I went to Google and found an intriguing haiku writing website. It was just too tempting. I just plugged in a few of my key words. And voila, a haiku better than my so far developed draft. You know Vanessa, come to think of it, this is not the first time that I was accused of cheating on writing a haiku. It was in middle school grade 8. I had the terror of the entire school teaching my English class. He was always shouting and picking on and embarrassing the students. This was 1968. He often carried a heavy yardstick and although I never saw him striking any students he sure knew how to scare us. If a student was foolish to be caught not paying attention the teacher would slam that yardstick on the student’s desktop. When our homework was to write a haiku he instantly outed me for cheating and got me to confess that my father “helped me”. My father pretty much wrote it for me. I’ll never forget the terror and the shame. I must admit that I missed it and it was fun finding a partial view of Hitch standing on the well deck with a punt stick. I'm guessing that the young man in the photo on the wall is not Hitch, however since he has his back to the camera I suspect he is an offspring to the elusive mystery man. Those hungry viewers will be seeking out other vlogs to satisfy their narrowboat cravings. David John and Kevin Shelly still command many subscribers, and Minimalist recently announced their moving on. It would be wise to partner with them so they could pass the torch to you and give their loyal viewers a place to go rather than just dropping off.

  57. Vann, I've had a bread machine for over 20 years and from my experience I believe that the moisture in your onions may have doomed your loaf. You may want to consider investing in a dehydrator. You live the sort of lifestyle that could really take advantage of that food dehydrator with herbs and fruit. You find so many apples, you could make apple chips for the winter. There are so many options. A simple small round dehydrator is only about £40.

I never told you before but we have found some of the other biscuit treats that you have had in past episodes. I sort of brings us closer to you in a way. My impression is that you were not thrilled with the brown water at first but you just kept on smiling. We're not as mindful as you but you have had an influence on us. I checked with some narrowboater's and here are their responses to your washer question: liftoff_oversteer says: Have decent set of lithium batteries and a beefy inverter. bikerchef1200 says: Hi, I'm totally off grid . I run mine on a cold setting washing half a load at a time as it doesn't like too much weight. I have the machine plumbed into the hot water too ( although some people say this isn't advisable but I have done for the last 3 years) . I have the engine running along with 975w of solar recharging 4 trojan t105 6v batteries . I do believe it's better to have a more analog machine too as some inverters can't cope with the electrics in the circuit boards of the fancy ones. The inverter i use is a cheap modified sine wave one from China it was advertised as a 3000w but I don't really think its anymore than 2000w, it works for me to run a fridge tv and all of the usual charging.

  72. Hey Vanessa😊! Now that winter is approaching I thought that I would share this with you. No obligation required. I feed the birds in my back yard (garden) and I've been putting out a lot of peanuts in shells. Mostly Blue Jays devour them, with the occasional tufted titmouse. Most days at 2:00 in the afternoon, I place a pile of about 25 or 30 unsalted roasted peanuts in the shell on a small table under my chocolate mimosa tree and I sit back and wait for the show. It's so fun. In only a short amount of time there are 4 or 5 pairs of blue jays that show up one after the other. They pick their peanut and fly off with it and are soon back for more. I have a lot of other birds in my yard but this is quite a show. It only takes about half an hour from start to finish. Anyway, the reason I'm telling this is that I had some curiosity about the species and I found a very entertaining bird channel on youtube. Yes, they are North American birds, but you may find it interesting. Just search for Lesley the Bird Nerd on YouTube sometime when you are in need of entertainment. Cheers.

  74.  @themindfulnarrowboat  No, “we don’t need no stinking badges”. Vann, this one was a head scratcher. You rarely show your entire boat so I was wondering if there was a motorcycle on board. I concluded that that motorcycle rider early in the vlog was just a red herring and that Hitch was actually lurking over your right shoulder in that pretty photo of the sunset with the side silhouette of a person in the lovely sunset. I couldn’t tell, but at first appeared to be that that person had a fishing pole, but vegans don’t fish. Did you really film in that spot just for that photo? Seems like a lot of work for an audience of one. Do people still refer to it as filming even though it’s digital? I’ll bet that there are some children who have asked “mummy, what is film?”. You would make Sir Alfred proud, although he was truly a man of his generation with his regard to women. Today he would be outed as a “me too’er”. Bring on the sloe gin!

When your theme music starts playing he gets as close to the telly as he can and he waits for Zyphyr to make her appearance. Then the incessant barking begins. This excites my female and she goes sniffing him. It's quite a sight to see. When Zyph was rolling in the grass, it set off my dogs.

Many apprehensions are rooted in fear and can be overcome by psychological treatment exposure therapy that is essentially systematic desensitization. For instance Hitch could remain silent for a time like Teller of Penn & Teller. Or start by wearing a hat and sunglasses at first and gradually remove them. It's a simple therapy that has a high rate of success.

Today I was attempting another haiku for #abrewwithaviewandahaiku and I got stuck after the first line - "A willow in the wind", which I was trying to tie into your flowing hair at the breezy windlass. My name is one syllable so there were not many nicknames for me (John & Johnny). A while ago, when I was promoting you, I made a suggestion to Fran (Rich) to watch your vlog since you both have similar intellectual curiosity regarding nature. Fran wrote that she took my advice and watched your vlog. My suggestion is for you to meet Fran (and other popular vloggers) in person on their vlogs so their watchers and meet you and in turn add your channel to their repertoire. Meet for a drink or a meal and some good vlogging times. You will be rewarded by new friends and new viewers.

By the way, we subscribe to Brit-box and Acorn TV. We watch a lot of British TV programs that are new to us although, perhaps, old to you. You appeared not to be familiar with the term Press the Flesh but I heard that exact phrase on Shakespeare & Hathaway or Pie in the Sky just a week or so after we first discussed it and I said Ah-Ha. Those two channels and YouTube helped us survive Covid lockdown. I generally find current American TV rather revolting. British TV is so much better. Looking forward to #104.

  127. Vann, Another simply lovely vlog. You are so in tune with nature. We especially loved the rainbow eucalyptus trees, it was quite a find. Did it have the odor of Vick's vapor rub? There was also some debate here between my wife and me about taking time to photograph the mosquito on Zephyr, it was an interesting choice. We would have brushed it away immediately. Perhaps the mosquitos in UK are a kinder and gentler and much more polite than here in America, like the stereotypical English Lady. Here in America mosquitos carry a litany of nasty diseases and such. We avoid going outside at dusk when they are most active. Apparently, after some quick reading on line-just now, UK mosquitos are more of a nuisance and not as aggressive as in America. Why am I not surprised? We see so many UK real estate {AKA houses} shows & narrowboat vlogs and only rarely have we seen window screens in any. We are astounded by that. We would never leave a window open here in USA. Never! We watched almost as soon as you posted. Take care!

  144. Vanessa, Happy Thanksgiving! Here, in the afterglow of our feasting, we began watching your vlog. Once you started to become popular we get the dreaded obligatory YouTube commercials. On TV, we usually we get a five second counter and we are right on it and we skip. I don't know how it is in UK, but here in America Commercials Are King. Today it was different. After just 5 seconds we were hooked and I watched the ad. It was the Apple Christmas commercial 2023, Fuzzy Feelings. I highly recommend. That was just a lovely prelude, then your vlog ran. Honestly, Alice Grace is laying limp with gloomy, dreary, overcast Phil whinging over your engine and you are sunny as a beautiful summer day without a care in the world. Then you said it..."I hope Phil's not evaporated!" Vanessa, it's been 10 hours since we watched that and I'm still laughing. This may be the time to go electric like you previously wished. Cheers!

Years ago ('82) I had a work assignment in San Francisco which is across the country from home. There was this young English girl that was on staff there and we used to kid about differences in language and she introduced me to her plimsolls and that stuck with me, so I decided to buy everything Brittish and I ordered a pair of plimsolls. Didn't know until now that they were named after 1890 s Dr Samuel Plimsoll. Additionally I purchased some magnetic canal medallions and a tiny model narrowboat from an online chandlery and a Crusing The Cut Tee. So, I made a good start so far. Do you have any other good ideas? You know Vann, You are a very positive glass half full person. I'm guessing in advance of watching the narrowboat vlogs that will be pissing and moaning about the heat. I somehow knew that you would not. PS: My central air conditioning has been running since the end of May. Sometimes I get cold at night.😜🤣

The question that arises is: Why do they wag their tails constantly? A quick Google study on Wiki states "the the reasons are poorly understood. It has been suggested that it may flush up prey, or that it may signal submissiveness to other wagtails. Recent studies have suggested instead that it is a signal of vigilance that may aid to deter potential predators. I find it fascinating. Thank you so much for introducing this bird. I've been on South Street in Philadelphia after midnight and I can see the similarities in behavior. I believe it's a mating signal. Bon voyage. I often tell her how much all of that exposure tends to bring us down. It's so political now here. I once found it somewhat entertaining but now it's just maddening. I now would be much better off to be isolated...like a life in a beautiful life on a narrowboat. Today it's wall to wall coverage about the murdered children in their classroom, 19 fourth grade children and their teachers dead. You and I both worked in a classroom, just imagine the unimaginable. And now the gun nuts are saying there should be MORE GUNS in schools to defend themselves. Do you thing UK would accept my application for asylum to escape USA craziness? Color me Green with envy.

  241. I must say that I got a bit dizzy from all of your quick edits, especially in the first five minutes or so. Perhaps the editor was sitting too close to the scissors; or am I misguided and you were you building up the hectic pace of the city? They were all beautiful scenes but I found myself craving to view more of each canvas longer than the three of four seconds allowed.

  263. Vanessa, Please take this with as many grains of salt as you wish. It's only Monday and you already have1,073 views.You posted on Friday. Look at The Foxes, they consistently post exactly the same time each Friday at 4:00 PM. They must have figured out how to post at 4:00 in every different time zone around the world. So, until you top the Foxes I believe that you should follow their model and you may just pick up more viewers. That and You and Zypher's face on every front page. Additionally you could banner the commercial free aspect of your vlog, because some boat tubers are very heavy on ads. Just some thoughts.

But, as a watcher I know that we (my wife and me) watch as many new vlogs on Friday when the Foxes post. And you did get a lot of views most recently. Perhaps YouTube does not promote you because you are commercial free. That is a selling point from my view. We need to find more ways to promote your excellent work. It's just at such a higher level than most boat tube vlogs.

  272. V, Responding to the complaint from a reddit individual about posting spam. I believe that it is just one extremely vengeful person trying to get even. You see, each reddit channel is subject to the rules of the individual subjective moderator and some of those rules are specifically vague. Many people are cool but some have a God complex, a stick up their patoot. The definition of spam? I don’t consider my introduction to your vlog as spam, but some do apparently. I don’t know if you do, but many of the other YouTube vloggers that I watch do receive negative comments and from what they say, those comments are just deleted and not paid much attention. I BELIEVE THAT IS THE CASE HERE. However, if you want me to stop using Reddit, I will. I’m sorry to use this board to post this but I do not have your private email.
