  3. I have dived some of the High Seas fleet including the Markgraf which is one of the deeper wreck, so not much time without deco-stops & pre-Nitrox days. Sadly the visibility was not great & I seem to remember it was mostly upside down. Impressive though.

  4. Interesting & a good presentation up to your usual standard. I remember back in the 70's Ludovic Kennedy on the BBC trying to tell what went wrong in an hour long programme with maps & expert commentary by guests. On another note, a friend's father was in the RN on arctic convoys. As a qualified sniper he often was in the bow shooting at mines. He told of being keep waiting for 3 days outside a port while the Russians painted over any foreign signs on the cargo & labelled it with Cyrillic writing.

  6. Very interesting. What happens when an Admiral with grand designs meets a Kaiser with a withered arm (inferiority complex) who hated his English mother and her relatives. Had the pleasure many years ago of diving on some of the High Sea Fleet in Scapa Flow but due to the murky water it was hard to get the full picture of the scale of these ships.

  8. 10 years of mediocrity. Never understood why thee was a midships turret in so many designs. Surely its limited use outweighed the weight being used elsewhere on the ship i..e more armour or greater speed.

  9. Visited Jersey twice as a kid (first flights :) ) and went to Gorey & Elizabeth castles. Sadly can't remember much of them now.

  15. This whole Guadalcanal series has been very interesting & informative with the USN learning very slowly from its mistakes. The sardonic humour is the icing on the cake. Sadly many sailors lost their lives due to their leaders numerous poor decisions. @Drachinifel do you plan to cover Truk Lagoon?

  27. So the take away is best to serve in a small ship or hope to be killed outright by a cannonball rather than hideously mangled by large splinters. It also explains how the Victory took out so many of the crew with a single broadside through the stern of the Bucentaure.
