Summary: hold out as long as you can to try and force a Pyrrhic victory on your enemy. Yet another interesting & well researched video, thanks

The importance of Ferdinand & Isabella in turning Spain into a world power cannot be underestimated. Thanks for the informative & detailed video.

Become a soldier! Benefits: not getting paid, homesickness, become an alcoholic, die of dysentery or many other diseases, catch the pox and/or the clap, be horribly mutilated, see exotic places & be stalked by death at every opportunity. Come home alive & regale you friends with many tales. Its a great life in the army until its not.

@mihovilraboteg6160 True. Under the doctrine of the enemy of my enemy is my friend, not that it helped France in the long term with their fight with the English.

The battle before the rise of the Romanov's. Very interesting.

Rule 1: always pay your mercenaries.

As the saying goes "Love finds a way" but sexual desire/lust often gets first place😁Money is commonly part of the process.

@genghiskhanthereaper6327 Off your meds I see. Caps Lock does not make your comment important or relevant 🤣

@ZS-rw4qq To make them appear more grand & separate themselves from the more common Wesley name

Very interesting! More new information for me & thanks to you for a very good video explaining the causes clearly. I look forward to more great content from you in 2023. Sadly my funds are limited so I can only support you by renewing my Nord subscription.

Very interesting! As a Brit we get little European history: a bit of the 100 Years' War i.e. Crecy & Agincourt, then Nothing until Napoleon, a brief nod to the Franco-Prussian omitting the Siege of Paris & the Commune then on to WW1 & 2. So this channel is filling in the gaps very nicely. Great work👍

@Gibson7Clans Oh look a troll with a new account Joined 28 Sept 2023. 🤣

Danish army?Christian IX not doing much except taking subsidies & getting people killed.
6
Very interesting. Nothing happens in isolation & the Swedish army reforms are starting to get results.
6
Very informative 😀 I only knew about them from Total War.
6
Another very interesting video! Eastern European history is not taught in UK schools
6
Thanks for this interesting and previously unknown piece of history. Keep up the good work 😃

UK here. The English Civil War could make a good series as there is variety and development of tactics and of course the formation of the "New Model Army" plus sieges to boot 😁
5
With the "Auld Alliance" England always had to keep an eye on the Scottish border that was for the most part quite porous. Thanks for this often overlooked subject.
5
Very interesting & informative about a chapter of history I was unfamiliar with.
5
Thank you for this & your hard work. An excellent presentation. Here in the UK the Thirty Years War is overlooked as it co-insides with the run up to The English Civil War. I first got interested after watching the film "The Last Valley" with Michael Caine & Omar Sharrif. The only book to read was C V Wedgewood's The Thirty Years War. British Historians seem not to be interested in studying/writing about it.

Corporal Jones "They don't like it up 'em!" Given the choice I'd rather be shot than be stabbed by a bayonet.

This was a completely new piece of history to me. Very interesting that a seemingly strong fortress succumbed so quickly due to poor defence & a masterful attack. Having broken my collar bone I wonder how well Vauban coped with the injury.
4
Proof that when up against religious zealots dying to get to heaven it alters the odds considerably. It was a very dark day for England when Henry V married Catherine as she undoubtedly passed on her father madness to her son & thus started the War of the Roses. Thanks for the video

The Destruction of Sennacherib By Lord Byron (George Gordon) The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold, And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold; And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea, When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.
4
Thanks for the video & an interesting topic.
4
Very interesting! Thanks for your efforts. Protestants no unified command & a lack of co-ordination. River crossings always a hazardous undertaking especially if you don't know where the enemy is. Looking forward to the next episode 😀

Another high quality video and a story well told. It may have been a siege but a lot more was going on plus the war at sea was causing many problems for the Spanish as both Dutch & English ships were better than the Spanish.
3
They didn't have time to dig tunnels. It had to be a quick victory or retreat.
3
It the early days it was a problem of consistency: of shot, gunpowder and the quality of the casting of the cannon, any of which could effect and accurate result.
3
It was only with luck that the defenders held out. The Pope was next to useless & the Spanish half-hearted at best. The ingenuity & the fact that they were fighting for their lives help in the defence as the Ottoman would have given no quarter: death or slavery awaited.
3
Booty but not in the modern sense: well maybe. Thanks for another very interesting video.

Thanks for an interesting video.

What an excellent presentation on a subject I hadn't really thought about much before That word "Honour" has been the cause of so much bloodshed in centuries past. Nice to see some new figures in the animation. Keep up the good work! 👍

This was a very interesting video about a piece of history I was unaware. All the gold & silver the Spanish plundered fro the Americas and in the end so little to show for it. I believe treasure hunters are still finding wrecks in the Caribbean with some finds proving very interesting/valuable. The Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas - which translates as 'Our Lady of Wonders' - sank in 1656 off the coast of the Bahamas after it collided with another boat from its fleet.
2
Well done 😁 A comprehensive coverage of sieges.
2
Thanks for the video! Lots of new information for me that painted a more complex picture of the early years of the war.
2
I had heard of him but was unaware of how much he had done & how his influence had spread. Thanks for the video

@Raadpensionaris So I learnt after leaving school but even with Elizabeth 1st it is mostly execution of Mary, Queen of Scots & the Spanish Armada. The Earl of Leicester was a failure & lost many men in his venture to help the Dutch.

@feldgeist2637 Ooops, I guessed instead of checking

Very interesting video! Your channel covers topics overlooked by other history channels. Keep up the good work, you know it is appreciated!

Thanks for an interesting & informative video

Another very good, interesting and detailed video. Thanks

Thanks for an interesting video. I can't take Victor Davis Hanson & Andrew Roberts seriously, they let their right-wing politics colour their viewpoint i.e. it is biased. Please stop using the ridiculous American expression "with a grain of salt". The correct saying is "with a pinch of salt" as the latter will alter the flavour of food to make it more tasty while the former has no change at all.
1
Thanks for this. Very interesting as no one knows the 30 years war is about to start.
1
Another bit of history I was unaware of and interesting to find out about
1
Very interesting. Once again it proves that logistics and transportation are important factors in warfare.
1
This battle was one of J.F.C Fuller's "Decisive Battles of the Western World". I wonder if his opinion needs to be revised?
1
Thanks for this in depth look at the fall of Constantinople. More trouble for Eastern Europe to follow, the Ottomans aren't going to rest on their laurels.

Why fight when extortion is more lucrative & less risky. Shrewd move 😉
1
Well the Hapsburg's didn't exactly come out smelling of roses, plus their inbreeding didn't help.

Galleys OK for the Med. but no good for rougher waters & colder climates
