  1. It was class warfare by Thatcher & Co to destroy the power of the unions that had brought down the Heath government of which she was part. It was ideological vandalism that preferred to pay unemployment benefit to ex-miners rather than retraining, upskilling the workforce etc. Remember that Thatcher thought the UK could prosper as a service economy: she instigated "The big bang" deregulation of the banking sector that led to housing boom & bust, privatisation of water & energy (that has turned out very well 🙄), the failure of "the share holder democracy" as most shares in the privatised industries we rapidly bought up by pension & hedge funds that saw boardroom salaries rocket.
