  1. Successive governments have ignored provisions for parents and children. Once again the rot started with Thatcher. By selling of council houses it reduced the stock of social/affordable housing and forced more and more renters into the private market. By allowing banks to offer mortgages it caused 2 problems: it drove a property bubble thus the multiple of lending went up & in turn that meant that 2 incomes were vital to buy a house which everyone was told they must do or be a loser. Maternity pay is poor and that forces women to return to work early Childcare/nurseries have been left to the private sector which has driven up the cost rather than subsidised state run nurseries or workplace creches. These and many other policies have been a great disincentive to having children
