@erinkinsella91 Whilst some set up soup kitchens the Catholic Church did next to nothing also. it was the change of the British government with its different approach to economics that made a bad situation worse. The workhouses on the mainland were not better than the ones in Ireland

@johngray8606 Citation needed for Queen Victoria. You are using hindsight & today's attitudes to judge the past. Food was given but then the government changed. You obviously have no idea what £2k bought back then (the Turkish Sultan wanted to give £10k). It wasn't "measly" Valuations show that in today's currency £2,000 in the mid-1800s would be around £6.5million. Next time try not to show your bias so openly.

@johngray8606 I'll get my violin. The Irish the most oppressed people in The World, no one has suffered like the Irish. Just because you don't like the information given doesn't mean you can ignore it or rewrite history. You can't apply today's values & ways of thinking on the past or the economic ideas. Trevelyan was part of a government that believed in Laissez Faire, so they let the market set its own rules. Who is Megan Langreck? Is the name correct? Not on Google as an author or on Amazon. What is the title of this very information unbiased book?
