  2. An uncle was a tail gunner with 75 NZ Squadron based at Newmarket. The Stirling was shot down in May '42 on a raid on the Ruhr. It had been sent out with a defective compass. After the navigator was badly injured by flak the crew parachuted him to get medical help from the Germans as they didn't think he'd live to get back home. He was the only survivor although blinded. He is buried in Rheinburg cemetery, he was only 24.
