  21. I am not surprised by this but I was ignorant of the actual situation. Back in the 20th Century I considered moving to the US to be with my then girlfriend, however if I became a student I could NOT use the qualification to work in the US for 5 years after graduation. The only other way was to marry but the spouse has to prove they can 100% support you for at least 3 years ( it was something like $30k a year back then). It is true that for many years the Irish had no problem emigrating to the USA. I worked with a Irishman who had been an illegal immigrant for 4 years in Boston (he choose to leave). Never any problems. Meanwhile in the UK the government won't fix a broken system & is happy to allow people to drown crossing the channel rather than change the rules to keep the racists & xenophobes happy.
