  2. The first full-length narrative film was 'The Story of The Kelly Gang, produced in 1906 in Australia. Unfortunately, only 17 minutes of the hour-long movie have survived over the years.

  3. I'm only 3 minutes in but had to say that this is a big issue in the tropics. Mud wasps LOVE tiny holes to lay their eggs in and then add food, then cover with mud. If Pitots aren't covered when on the ground, there is a high chance a wasp will find that uncovered Pitot. EDIT: 2 minutes later, Simon's writer gives an example.

  4. In the 90s, as a tech guy, I was on the 'We Hate Bill Gates' board of directors. He was at one point, possibly the most hated man in tech. There used to be a how much is Bill gates Worth counter on the web, where you could watch a money clock tick over showing how much Bill was making every second. At one point it was suggested that if Bill dropped a dollar note it wasn't worth his time to pick it up. Nowadays, I am in awe of his philanthropy, and have deep respect for what he is doing with the wealth he amassed. Perhaps it was because he had everything he wanted or needed, and had to redirect all that money somewhere. The beauty is in where he and his wife chose to direct it.

  5. I've been busy working on a car today. It's taken me three goes to actually watch this all the way through. I learned this: The WD-40 recipe was basically stolen from Lawson, leading me to the decision that I will avoid buying WD-40 in the future. I have only used WD-40 because it's convenient. It's sold in servos, supermarkets, and discount stores, so if you need a dispersant, it's in your face everywhere. However, a little-known fact about the current recipe for WD-40 is that it is slightly acidic, meaning if you try to protect high-Carbon steel with it, it will cause rust spots on said steels. I use either INOX, or a Lanolin-based dispersant/lubricant, even though it means going to a hardware store or automotive store to get it.

  6. Australian: Cairns is pronounced, 'cans'. Irukandji are damned scary little buggers. I used to live 'Up North' and was always waiting to get stung one day. Stonefish. They're hard to see if you don't know what you're looking for. Cassowaries carry an air of calm when seen walking beside a road (they're common in The Daintree). Tourists stop and get close to take photos, not realising that if they feel threatened, they'll open you up. Yeah, don't cuddle platypus.

  7. Interesting. Back in the 70s and 80s when I did a LOT of hitchhiking here in Oz, most of us used a closed fist with the pointing finger out, pointing down at an angle to the ground. I only ever saw the 'thumb' method in movies, or used by OS tourists.

  9. I used to make deliveries, and pick up freight from a meatworks many years ago. I was shown around the slaughter floor and through the processing areas. I have seen these bolt guns in use up close. The meatworks slaughter floor was above ground, and there was a crush at the top of a ramp. Cattle would be hit by the bolt gun, then a hook attached to a chain was driven between the achiles tendon and bone on one leg. The beast was then hoisted upside down and was carried via a chain conveyor up to another level. The conveyor crossed an access road and was open on one side. You'd often see cattle that hadn't been properly killed kicking and struggling, upside down, as they went up the conveyor.

  11. Brilliant. I was 6 years old in 1969. The significance of the Moon landing was lost on me. However, as I grew older, my interest in the astronauts and the Saturn V rocket grew. Thank you for this video. It builds on that web of related space travel history that I enjoy learning about..

  12.  @mattheweurt26  Cattle that fight the hook and sometimes come off the hook (which has happened at that meatworks) aren't having spasms. I think you missed the "...many years ago..." in my comment. It was the 90s. Further, it wasn't a small meatworks. This was an Australian Meat Holdings abattoir, one of the largest meatworks in the state at the time. They processed many hundreds of head per day during the season. Yeah, the cattle I saw weren't spasming. The cattle that were having spasms were usually still by the time they reached the processing floor.

  17. I've been walking in rainforests and have had trees 'rain' on me. No, not because of rain on leaves, but because of that 'Guttation' thing. Not a bunch of trees, but single trees amongst the forest. I never knew what it was until I saw this explanation, Simon. Oh, and I've been privileged to watch transpiration happening oftentimes. It is one of the things that enthrals me about rainforests. They literally create their own tree-hugging clouds.

  20. Not much different to Australia's poker machine industry. We are world leaders by far in the amount of money lost to gambling. Singapore is a close second. We're almost double the US. Poker machines (Electronic Gaming Machines) is where most of Australia's gamblers' money is spent.

  23. 10:30 Guava is a favourite of Fruitfly (at least in Australia). When I was growing guava, I'd always split open the fruit and check for fruitfly larvae before chomping one down. I have been unfortunate to have eaten one that was half infested. I couldn't taste the difference between infested and non-infested, but then looked at the uneaten half of the fruit and saw how many were in it. I guess a little protein with your fruit can't hurt.

  36. I'm a perfect example of the results of surviving a crash while drunk af. It happened in 1983. No other vehicles or people were involved (country road). Multiple lacerations requiring skin grafts on the back of my legs caused by being caught on the side window of the car as it was rolling. Compound fracture of the left femur. Collapsed lung, ruptured stomach, ruptured liver, broken collar bone, busted face etc. I remember nothing of the crash except for a small moment when friends found me (it was night time) and the sound of the air ambulance taking off. It's a long story.

  38. 5:45 Allelopathy is one thing. Certain trees have growth suppressant chemicals in the leaves they drop. The resulting decomposition of the leaves causes the topsoil under the tree to be unsuitable for weeds or other trees to germinate and compete with the original tree for nutrients.
