  1. I've been walking in rainforests and have had trees 'rain' on me. No, not because of rain on leaves, but because of that 'Guttation' thing. Not a bunch of trees, but single trees amongst the forest. I never knew what it was until I saw this explanation, Simon. Oh, and I've been privileged to watch transpiration happening oftentimes. It is one of the things that enthrals me about rainforests. They literally create their own tree-hugging clouds.

  2. 10:30 Guava is a favourite of Fruitfly (at least in Australia). When I was growing guava, I'd always split open the fruit and check for fruitfly larvae before chomping one down. I have been unfortunate to have eaten one that was half infested. I couldn't taste the difference between infested and non-infested, but then looked at the uneaten half of the fruit and saw how many were in it. I guess a little protein with your fruit can't hurt.

  3. 5:45 Allelopathy is one thing. Certain trees have growth suppressant chemicals in the leaves they drop. The resulting decomposition of the leaves causes the topsoil under the tree to be unsuitable for weeds or other trees to germinate and compete with the original tree for nutrients.
