  1. When I lived on a rural block (1800 acres) just North of a town/city in Australia, all the power lines in the area were three-phase (240 volt). The area was once mainly dairy farms but had changed to large cropping with circular boom sprinklers. Farms need a heavy-duty power supply and three-phase provides that. It's also arguably more dangerous than single phase but I wouldn't know. I'm not an electrician, just a local history buff.
