My father worked in seismic oil search in Papua-New Guinea in the early 70s. Mostly miles from any village on the upper reaches of some of the big rivers in PNG. In one area, he was the boss of over 400 people, mostly local natives. At one point he fired a dozen workers who were caught drunk and sleeping at a remote camp, away from the main supply/base camp. The locals took offense to this and 200 men, dressed to kill, turned up at his cabin/longhouse at base camp. They demanded he come down the stairs and face retribution. Then his 'houseboy', who was a 60+ year old senior of the tribe came up behind him (dad was sitting at the top of the steps). He had elephantitis in one leg, and dad looked after him well. He told the men that the people deserved to be fired, and they should all go away and leave the boss alone. And they left. He was a senior chieftain/elder of the local area. Dad may well have been butchered if not for that old man.

@softsofasoftsofa It was more a cultural thing. The tribal chief had to work as the 'Boss man's' right-hand-man. Two 'chiefs' working together.

@Samoanhulk24 The locals were paid by the oil company, not my father.

@alonsomartinez8487 I bet you heard a lot of that from him when you were a kid... in your bedroom late at night.
