  1. I had one of those mad chemistry sets for kids back in the late 60s and early 70s, as well as the electronics kits. My mate showed me how to make explosive gas using Condies crystals and some other chemical. In my late teens in the early 80s, when I lived in remote rainforest country in Australia, I learned about carbide lamps. I had a couple, and if I had tourist-type visitors in my camp, I'd load up one of the lamps so it would over-produce acetylene and make loud POPS when it was burning. And they were loud! Used to freak out the tourists.
