My opinion, purely because of where I live (Australia) is that batoning is pointless. Our timber is in the main very brittle and very hard. For most of our timber, we can take a long branch of thinnish timber and snap it across a rock or over another log to break it into measured lengths. Most of our forest country is covered in leaf and bark litter, so kindling is no issue. Granted though, in the wet, batoning may be a good option. (EDIT) Most of our trees, eucalypts predominantly, drop branches. So we get a wide variety of timber thicknesses just laying on the ground. (EDIT2): I do enjoy your videos Lilly.

Sorry for the multiple comments. I just got to the lanyard part. I have an adjustable lanyard on my machete and my larger knives. I have them wrapped around my hand in such a way that if when I'm chopping I lose the handle from my grip, it doesn't don't swing towards my leg. I would never have the lanyard around my hand if I was walking with the knife/saw. As for using a lanyard to hang a knife/saw off a pack; no. Your blades need to be secure. They're your most important tool. In respect to 'closed' lanyards, I have a knotted lanard and an adjustable lanyard on my big chopper. That way I can secure the knife to my hand and also use the knotted lanyard as a pseudo handle exrtension when chopping.

Just curious, what's that knife you're using? ;o) <-wink

+steppenwolf (I like your music ...) True. We can baton, but only with the soft-woods. Although I've never batoned over here. The timber in the main is pretty brittle and snaps easily, plus there's a heap of kindling/firestarter available on the ground. Our leaf litter is so full of volatile eucalypt oils that given a decent start, it'll burn when wet/damp.
