Back in the late 80s I got to do some contract work at the old Mt Morgan mine site in Queensland, Australia. In the 1900s it was the deepest open-pit mine in the world and held the record for the richest Gold mine for many years. It's an interesting place because many of the older buildings and settling tanks etc were still there back then, although long disused. We were actually demolishing the old crusher plant. Copper was also mined at Mt Morgan, and both Copper and gold were smelted on site. I believe many more of the older buildings and infrastructure has been demolished or buried due to the toxic chemicals creating a hazardous environment. Last I heard, a company had developed an economical method of extracting gold from the many thousands of tons of tailings on site. The open cut pit was abandoned many years ago and is now full of water. The hole was about a mile deep.
