In the mid-eighties, I'd buy kangaroo skin/fur rugs and would make knife sheaths from them. They were about five or ten bucks each (close to 300 or more for a full hide today). I could layer the skin to make it thicker without worrying about the cost. Cattle leather (and floor rugs) were way more expensive.

I've talked to leather workers before and the one thing they have all said is that roo leather is really easy to work with due to its inherent strength and flexibility. Cattle leather will tear under stress. Of course, we're talking comparative thickness here too. Roo hide is a lot thinner than cattle hide. If you want something that suffers a lot of wear, like a saddle, I don't think roo skin would do the job. But I'm no expert. Maybe it could be laminated?
