13:00 The Dutch extensively mapped the Western coast of Australia and even attempted to settle there, according to archeological discoveries. The evidence of Dutch discovery and settlement was suppressed by the British for many years. It was funny for me when I was a kid because my early schooling on the east coast taught us how Capt Cook discovered Australia. When I went to Perth as a ten-year-old, we were taught that the Dutch discovered Australia on the West coast and were taken on excursions to the Freemantle museum to show us the Dutch relics there. They didn't know much of the East coast, but they knew the West very well.

9:55 You'll see a lot of the bays etc in Far North Queensland retain their names from 1770 when Cook was up that way. Cape Tribulation was named because that's around where Cook hit the reef for the first time. He ended up in the Endeavour River further North and the locals looked after him.

Man, that's cool. I have a collection of the old 1:50000 maps that cover most of Cape York. They were made using data from the 40s thru to the 60s if I recall correctly. I've been a bit of a map geek since my childhood. We moved from Brisbane to Perth in the early 70s and when I got there, our first geography class was mapping, and the textbook we had was using Mt Tibrogargan to show contours. I was 9or 10 years old and was so excited that a mountain near where I used to live was in a textbook. After that I was hooked.

8:05 I need to weigh in say that the land that is designated 'nature or minimal use' in NSW is land that is too steep or inaccessible for farming or forestry. All that purple stuff is wild country. If it wasn't, we white people would have raped it for its resources by now...Sadly, there are very few areas that are good for cropping or grazing that have been designated National park or environmentally important. Australia's attitude seems to be, "If we can't mine it, crop it, deforest it. or graze it, then bugger it, make it a National Park". Pretend environmentalism. Places of real importance such as the Daintree and some of Tasmania were tenaciously fought for by environmentalists. I personally know people who tree-sat up at Cape Trib in the early 80s, fighting to protect rare, pristine rainforests from development. Sorry, I'll stop now. I'm a mad greenie hippy and get carried away sometimes LOL.

Hi Maria. I worked for Ansett (air freight) in the 90s, before the airline got stolen from us. Yes, we have extremes of weather. Always have. But from my experience, the weather events are getting more intense and erratic.

@iankearns774 The main reason for the 'Queenslander' stilt style was for cooling, but yes, handy if you're in a flood zone or flood plain so long as you're not storing prized possessions under there.

Yeah, we copped some serious rain. The rain in the Southeast was what should have fallen up around Cairns way this time of year. The monsoon trough has been creeping South for the past 30 years...but climate change isn't a thing...

@billylionisnotagoat Well, no. Not a 90cm move. The monsoon trough has progressively 'licked' south over the past 20 odd years. I have seen it progressively reach further South since I was a kid of 13. This year I watched the trough throw south and that system that moved down from about Bundaberg right through into NSW was something that is seen closer to the equator. It was a slow-moving rain pattern that dumped Far North Wet season rains some 1800km further south than normal. It may just have been an anomaly, but given the plethora of weather anomalies across the planet, I'll lean towards Climate Change on a more extreme scale than continental shift. I hear you, but to change our climate the way it's been changing in my lifetime, Australia would have to be where PNG is now if the continental drift was a factor.

@daveg2104 That's a funny history when you consider that Cook crashed into the reef LOL. In my early and even high school education on the East coast never really mentioned the Dutch. It was only when I lived in Perth that it was considered important.

@glenchapman3899 Same era. I was in grade 1 and 2/3 in the late 60s, then did four years in Perth. When I came back to Brisbane, no mention was made of the Dutch in Australian history except for a little of Hartog but more the mutinies. It was as if QLD ed was trying to deny anything but Cook and the First Fleet.
