  1. I worked in Western QLD for a few years in oil search in the 70s. I would spend all day working in full sun in a pair of stubbies (shorts), thongs, and sometimes a hat. I have also spent some years living right on the coast, beachcombing, and camped just off the beach. I can attest that there is a difference in the way the sun 'burns' in central Australia compared to the coast. Further, the sun, or more, its UV rays from my experience are harsher further south compared to the tropical North. I grew up when the Ozone hole was a real concern, and remember the scientists on TV saying that it would take 20 or 30 years to see a reduction in the thinning of the Ozone layer (it's not a 'hole' per se) and to see any thickening at all. I recall reading some years ago that the 'hole' wasn't as big as it used to be but I haven't done any recent searching. Oh, no skin cancer yet as far as I know and the majority of my life has been in the full sun.
