I fell in love with the 555 Subarus the first time I saw them in rally. Prior to that I thought the car was all hype. I'd have bought one back then if I'd been rich enough. Beasts.

Ian is all rally fanboy now. That's very cool. Personally, rally is far more technical and dangerous than any other mortorsport. These guys drive at the very edge of no control. They allow themselves to let their vehicle slip and slide and then correct the uncontrol to continue driving. It's pure driving.

@Jus Cals Yep. I've had the pleasure of either owning or regularly driving early models and others. Foresters, WRXes, and hatchbacks. I learned that Foresters will go most places a regular 4WD will go but you need to rev high and dump them because they just won't crawl up a hill. You need to give them some throttle. I am a bit of an idiot, so I've put Foresters in places that Foresters weren't designed to go...

@Alberthoward3right9up True that. I've driven a Sportswagon too. Great cars. Yeah, clearance and mud (and deep sand) are their Achilles heel. I pulled a camping trailer up a steep, rutted gravel hill that a Landcruiser with no extra weight struggled to climb. Difference was, that I had to keep the momentum and revs up. They tend not to 'walk' up rough hills like a low range cruiser will do.

@Alberthoward3right9up Hehe. Well, our 'camper' trailer was much the same. A 6x4 with all our camping crap in it LOL. I'm currently sorting out a 2005 V6 4.0l SOHC Ford Courier Cab. It's only a 2WD but is a hi-lift model with an 1800x1800 tray. I've rebuilt the motor and am starting on the back. Eventually, I'll mount a winch on the front so I can drag it through crappy country.

@Alberthoward3right9up Kia, Hyundai, and the other 'Asian' manufacturers have surpassed European and US manufacturers in quality and reliability in leaps and bounds. I would buy a new Mahindra 4WD (Indian-made) over any other 4WD on the market today. They have standard equipment (Eaton diff-locker, ladder frame chassis, 9-star safety rating etc) that you would expect to pay 90K for, for 38K Australian. I'm talking full bash bars and roo bar, winch, blah blah BLAH. And, the running gear is taken from the engineering of the tractors Mahindra is famous for...like, the biggest manufacturer of tractors worldwide. I was a long-time Landcruiser devotee, but the new Mahindra makes them look like Tonka toys.

@Alberthoward3right9up It has the clearance in spades. I've driven a commondore (yes, I spelled it that way) with a 'country pack' up and down the Bloomfield track in the dry season, so yeah, I reckon this thing will be okay. I'm more worried about the fuel consumption. I've even replaced the regular clutch-type fan with an electric setup to try and save some tiny bit of fuel and gain some HP or torque.

@Alberthoward3right9up The standard on mine is a large, clutch assisted fan. I will pick up minimal savings with the swap out (twin fans...check my profile), but given the trouble I had with the clutch one, the electric worked out far less expensive and easier :). I got the fan assembly for free. All I had to do was modify the mounts and wire them up. I've made some really short, really amateur videos of the journey so far.
