  1. Some trivia about Queensland. When you're not looking at a map, it's easy to think that Queensland's coastal towns and cities are in a line running North/South. However, even though both Cooktown and Brisbane are on the coast, Cooktown is as far West as Cunnamulla, in Far West outback Queensland. I got my first realisation of the difference when I was in Bloomfield/Cooktown, talking to a friend on the phone who was in Brisbane. The sun had already set, and it was dark in Brisbane, but the sun was only just setting up where I was. It was still daylight.

I sometimes feel that a lot of people in the US will live in poverty and work their guts out all their life because they were brainwashed into that old trope, 'If you work hard enough, you can become rich and successful in the US'. The same mantra is chanted over here as well, but thankfully, our wage system allows people who work hard enough to have a healthy credit rating, even if they have no spare cah after paying their house payments and hire-purchasepayments.

  3. 12:30 Yes, Ian. The cost of healthcare, and the availability of quality healthcare are the major factors affecting the longevity of a society. If you check the map, those countries with free, or near-free healthcare have the highest longevity, whereas places such as the US, where healthcare isn't free, have lower figures. Then, when we get to African nations, where in many places there is little to no proper healthcare (and there is conflict), the figures are even lower. Pretty eye-opening, really.
