In my experience, the biggest issue with respect to houseplants and other nursery bought plants is the cheap plastic pot. It's scary to think how many end up in landfill or get left in stacks in back yards. Many folk will buy a plant in a cheap pot, buy a pretty pot to suit their decor and then repot it (or not) into the new pot. The pot the plant grew up in is now rubbish.
