I lived in Holland. They don't charge you extra to punish those that don't recycle. I can buy a crate of beer in glass bottles, then return the empty bottles in the crate and get the money back for the bottles/crate etc. It means I'm only paying for the beer and not the container. It's great. The homeless also play an excellent role by picking up ANY littered bottles and are the work force helping recycle. Same with plastic bottles. Reward recyclers instead of punishing those that don't. This is how society should work in general.

@geordie4339 So what is your proposal as an alternative to recycling? Even though my point is about giving me money back on recyclable products when I recycle them. 🤷♂

@geordie4339 There is a simple answer. The alternative to recycling is polluting our water and eco systems and is damaging on a global scale. This is going to cost money so we should all pay taxes to reduce the alternative to recycling. 🤷♂ You seem focussed on analysing the costs and have lost focus on why we as a species started recycling in the first place. We live in a capitalist society so obviously it will be corrupted. But we also live in a democracy and so it will have to be politically governed, sanctions imposed, recycling programs paid for, etc etc. You can't take politics out of it.

@geordie4339 I gave a simple answer, not a naïve one. The fact is. We must stop using landfill as much as possible and find better ways to prevent the contamination of ground water etc that doesn't include shipping tonnes of it around the world. The cost is just that, how much it costs to achieve a goal. It's irrelevant if it costs less to not achieve the goal... The lower the cost the better obviously. That's the reality of the situation. You can muddy the water to make it appear deeper. but you'll just be arguing different points.
