  1. a few other facts about Adelaide - it doesn't have any skyscrapers - it doesn't have any freeways - it doesn't have an underground railway system (all other mainland capitals do except Brisbane which is under construction) it really has been left behind since the 70's. Its also the place in Australia which is the most derided like I dunno, I guess Cleveland in the USA or Winnipeg in Canada. Its probably more like Winnipeg, but without the snow.

  2. I live in Adelaide and yeah it was growing quite fast up until the 1970s when it entered decline. It still grew but very slowly and has been labeled a 'rust belt' city over the past 30 years. It used to manufacture a lot of things, but now most of those factories have either closed or been repurposed. Its not as decayed as some of those American rust belt towns though as Australia is relatively prosperous enough to prevent that, but there are some suburbs of just empty decrepit factory buildings. It used to be Australia's third city but has now slipped to 5th and is no longer considered important by the eastern capitals which have sprinted ahead and doubled in size in the past 25 years. Nowadays it lacks younger people who typically move away for employment opportunities. A lot of migrants from the third world are forced to stay here for a couple of years on arrival into the country as its easier for them to get resident status, then they move to Sydney or Melbourne at the first opportunity. I've been to Monarto, about 20 years ago, and it was a pleasant experience. Saw a lot of giraffes and wild African dogs I'd never knew existed.
